Need root canal treatment in Jamaica, Queens? - What exactly are are root canals?
Root canals are the small passageways inside the tooth. The tiny miniscule passages contain soft tissue which actually makes up most of the structure of the tooth. when a dentist treats a root canal he removes the soft tissue that is composed of nerves, blood vessels and connective tissues. When decay takes place in the tooth and this become infected this is when the tissue begins to die. This can also happen when you have a fractured tooth or dental trauma.
When a patient leaves this untreated the infection does not go away and continues to spread, moving beyond the tooth itself it them moves into the gums and the jaw. This can cause a patient severe pain and in order to stop this pain a root canal procedure must be performed. The commonly used term “having a root canal” is short for root canal treatment when this routine procedure is performed. During the procedure the dentist or root canal specialist (endodontist) will use a local anesthetic on the affected area in order to numb the tooth. He will then drill a small hole into the surface of the tooth in order to numb it and gain access to the actual root canals. The process is similar to drilling for a cavity. Then the dentist will place tiny instruments into the root canal in order to clear the canals of any infection. Here the dentist will remove the dying tissue and debris from the canals. He then uses a bio-compatible material “gutta percha’ to fill the canals and finally will seal the access hole up on the outside. Later the dentist will use the existing tooth structure to make a crown, placing a crown over the existing tooth structure. The result is a tooth that looks like real tooth.
